Salt from the Dürrnberg
The salt in the Dürrnberg salt mines was worth more than gold. It was essential for many thousands of people between the Rhine and Vltava rivers. Salt in the eastern Alps was created more than 300 million years ago in the Triassic Ocean.

Salt was mined in the Hallstatt salt mines on an industrial scale 3500 years ago. The decline in Hallstatt’s salt production at the end of the Hallstatt period brought an upturn for Dürrnberg near Hallein.

The relatively flat landscape of the Dürrnberg had space for new settlements around 550 BC. There was a settlement of craftsmen in the only relatively flat mountain valley of the Dürrnberg.

The Roman infantry encountered units of Celtic chariots for the first time in northern Italy in 387 BC. Unlike the ceremonial Etruscan vehicles, these chariots were used exclusively for battles and chariot races.

Precious wine was drunk from drinking horns, but even more precious was the fact that it was kept in bronze beaked flagons. Instead of imported Etruscan bronze beaked flagons, Celtic artisans imitated excellent shoulder jugs (of which only six have been found so far in Europe).

Lime lye was used to tan the raw skins. For this purpose limestone was burned in a furnace and then doused with water. The complicated weaving technique was performed on upright looms with four rods.

The prince’s grave
Beneath a large stone/earthen mound a wooden chamber 3 metres long was erected. The sepulchre was about 1.5 metres high and the prince was buried on his two-wheeled chariot.
